United Nations Support Mission in Libya deputy chief warns against deteriorating conditions in Libya

Deputy Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ali Hassan al Zatari said he is in Cairo to interact with Arab League officials, Arab permanent delegates and Egyptian Foreign Ministry officials to expound on the critically deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Libya.

In a press conference Monday, Zatari said Libya is not a poor country but there are nearly 2.4 million persons in dire need for assistance.

A 2016 humanitarian response plan worth $165.6 million was declared late last year but only two percent of it was provided, he regretted.

Zatari pointed out to worsening health, drinking water, drainage and educational services in the country.

The UN has funding that could be enough for just the end of the spring and would stop offering assistance, meaning that life-saving medicine in Libyan hospitals and food storage in the country would run out, the UN official warned.
