Iraqi forces liberate al-Zobbat area in central Ramadi

Iraqi security sources managed to liberate an area in central Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province in western Iraq and raised the Iraqi flag over a building.

Security sources said that anti-terror troops in cooperation with the Iraqi army liberated Al-Zobbat district after fierce clashes with Daesh elements and inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorist group members and their military equipment.

The sources added that security measures were taken to protect civilians during the clashes.

A spokesman for the Counter-Terrorism Service, Sabah al-Numani, said troops and militiamen, supported by the air force, were making good progress.

They were heading towards the main government complex, Mumani, quoted by the BBC, added.
Ramadi, about 90km (55 miles) west of Baghdad, fell to Daesh in May in an embarrassing defeat for the Iraqi army.

Last month, government forces completed their encirclement of the predominantly Sunni Arab city, cutting off militants inside the centre from their strongholds elsewhere in Anbar province and in neighbouring Syria.
