About 300 students of the Indian High School dedicated one full day to the commemoration of the World Environment Day on June 5. Since the students were to have exams during the day itself, May 27th was the day planned for 'Connecting people to nature', the theme for World Environment Day 2017.

With the Environment Club at the school being the torch bearer of this event, a large number of stakeholders - students, teachers, parents and non-teaching staff members, were also involved in the day long activities aimed at raising awareness and positive action on environmental issues.

This year World Environment Day is special since it is coupled to the Year of Giving, in true spirit, the respect nature deserves. No step is too small because every action counts," said Smita Zuting, Environment coordinator at HIS.

This year IHS adopted an innovative approach to link environment with various curricular, co-curricular and extra- curricular activities along with leadership and team building, providing a holistic dimension to the celebration.

The entire programme was a package of opportunities and creativity, thrown open to the students of all weekend clubs operating in our school, honing the skills in specific but diverse areas across all grades from Grade 5 to Grade 12.

Talking about the activities held during the day, Grade 11 science student Aparajita Ramesh, environment club students leader, told Khaleej Times: "It was a festive occasion and at IHS we reaffirmed our commitment to our Environment in so many spectacular ways. The infotainment activities onstage included skits, debate, poetry, presentations, video-making, 'one- minute challenge', and quiz competition performed by students of adventure club, environment club, media club, oratory club, Gavel club, dance club and quiz club."

Some other offstage activities were a wide array of displays put up by students of artistique club, communicative English club, designer club, embroidery club, environment club, MUN club, Number- Experts club, in the form of murals, logos, word game- Scrabble, needle-work, photography, 'Plantathon', 'Relating Maths to Nature' Environment policies and challenges of different countries and 'Capture-a-moment' with caption.

Overall it was an enthralling session during which the school successfully wove the threads of a variety of talent into eco-friendly habits amongst students who understand the value of nature.
