Traffic violations
Abu Dhabi - Emirates Voice

There was a drop of 22 per cent in the number of traffic violations recorded by Sharjah Police in the last five months.

The statistics released by the traffic and patrolling department of Sharjah Police indicated that 74,184 violations were recorded from the beginning of the year till the current date as compared to 95,718 violations in the same period of the last year.

A top police official said that the drastic decline in the accident rate is strongly attributed to the awareness campaigns targeting motorists and road users. It comes as part of the strategic plan of the Ministry of Interior to ensure all the roads in all of the emirates are safer, he pointed out.

He lauded the significant role played by the various social media in highlighting the campaigns held by the police. It inculcated in motorists the importance of adhering by road safety rules and helped reduce the number of fatal road accidents.

Crossing red signal has also witnessed a drop from 6,742 violations last year to 3,856. The number of violations by motorists not buckling the seat belt came down from 18,501 in 2016 to 7,027 violations this year.

Motorists not adhering to road lanes and randomly jumping from one lane to another were also fined, with 57,898 such violations issued this year as compared to 61,565 in 2016.

Violations of using mobile phones while driving witnessed a decline from 8,910 in 2016 to 5,403 in 2017.
