Sharjah goes mobile for elderly

The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) is providing medical services and rehabilitation across the emirate with its 32 mobile social service units and three mobile mega-clinics.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, during Sharjah Ramadan Majilis, Afar Al Marri, director-general of SSSD, said: "The clinics and social services are providing best services to the elderly at their homes. Those who need physical therapies are visited several times a week.

"The mobile clinics are set up in customised buses equipped with advanced radiotherapy devices, ultrasound and laboratory devices. It conducts diagnosis of chronic diseases including diabetes, blood pressure, lung diseases, and cancer," she said.

"Since Sharjah has taken on the path of becoming the first Arab city to join the WHO's 'Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities' as part of the Strategic Plan 2017-2020, the SSSD has helped in transforming Sharjah into an 'age-friendly' city," Al Marri pointed out.

Mariam Al Qatari, director of Sharjah Senior Citizens Home, said that the home accommodates 40 elderly men and women who are being provided services by the SSSD. "The majority of these residents have no one. There are others who live outside and don't have anyone to take care during the mornings."
