ACCRA - Xinhua
School children gathered at the Ghana International School here on Wednesday to celebrate the United Nations Day with an aim to promote equality among people, especially children all over the world. The day, which was under the theme \"Europe, Equality and Respecting Diversity\", brought together schoolchildren from Ghana and other countries to experience the rich culture of other continents, especially Europe. In an interview with Xinhua, David Nii Addy, the team leader of the German Development Cooperation, stressed the need for parents to teach their children to respect other persons in all races, ethnic background, colors, religions and creeds. Respect for equality and diversity was one of the human rights and therefore it was only when children understood this that the quest for equality as the theme suggested would be attained, he said. The rights of children should be respected, he added, calling for a fight against activities such as child labor, which impeded children\'s education. The Ghana International School (GIS), established in September 1955, has 1,210 students spreading across two impressive campuses. It is internationally renowned for delivering high quality British education and producing some of the most influential men and women in Ghana and the world, including Paul Boateng, British High Commissioner to South Africa, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, Attorney General and Minister of Justice in Ghana, Nana Addo- Dankwa Akuffo- Addo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Nana Konadu Agyeman- Rawlings, former First Lady of Ghana. The school is a multi-racial institution comprising pre-school, basic school, senior high school and sixth form, and is the preferred school of children of the elite, diplomats and foreign nationals. The school has pupils from Ghana and other countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceana, the Caribbean and North America. The multi-racial nature of the school helps children integrate into other cultures globally Each year, the school celebrates the UN Day, which falls on Oct. 24, to showcase the diversity of culture and tolerance of the various continents. This year\'s celebration was centered on Europe and marked with various activities such as songs, dances, and pantomimes to showcase the talents of the children.
