Student winners and supporters of the arts and culture competition were honoured by the Community Development Authority (CDA) at a ceremony attended by Shaikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The ceremony was oganised by the Human Rights Sector of the CDA. The CDA initiative was in cooperation with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), aimed at spreading a culture of human rights in schools and instructing students about its importance in taking the nation forward. Khaled Al Kamda, Director of the CDA, said: “We would like to thank Shaikh Majid bin Mohammad for his continuous support to such events since it highlights the importance of human rights and has a large impact on humanitarian issues in the community.” He added: “The CDA continues to work with government and private stakeholders under the directives of a wise leadership to co-launch projects in this regard. This move is an innovative step to enhance public awareness about best human rights practices. I thank all winners for their excellent and creative work, which reflects their keenness to participate in efforts that establish new horizons in best human rights practices in the UAE.” Dr Omar Al Sahmsi, CEO of Human Rights Sector at the CDA, said: “We are committed to launch successful initiatives that are aimed at spreading the culture of human rights in all sectors in cooperation with our strategic partners, as it serves as an important tool to advance the nation.” The aim of the competition was to brief students on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, compare human rights’ Islamic values with those articulated in the Universal Declaration, and look at human rights issues from the perspective of the UAE society and child rights in particular. The categories of the competition included drawing, short story, poetry, photography and calligraphy.
