China's food and drug watchdog Monday promised increased safety checks of cod-liver oil products following media exposure of the hazards of overconsumption. China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) spokeswoman Yan Jiangying said at a press conference that a national campaign will be launched against unauthorized cod-liver oil producers. The CFDA will strengthen supervision of manufacturers, including their qualifications and production safety, Yan said, adding that unapproved enterprises will be ordered to suspend operations, recall products and be subject to sanctions. The state broadcaster China Central Television revealed that excessive consumption of cod-liver oil harmed children's health in a special program on March 15, the international consumer rights day.
