Poland has a chance to become a shale gas power alongside Romania, Britain and Ukraine, the Deloitte consultancy wrote Tuesday in an Oil and Gas Reality Check 2014 report.
The report authors note that shale gas could help these countries free themselves from the need to import Russian gas.
According to Deloitte, Poland and other countries with shale gas are strongly motivated to exploit their resources and could be helped in this aim by progress in shale gas mining technology.
In recent years, Poland issued over a hundred shale gas prospecting licenses on its territory, to Chevron, PGNiG, Lotos and Orlen Upstream, among others. However, some prospectors, including Exxon, Marathon and Talisman, have wound up their operations in Poland.
