Brazil's Marta scores a penalty
Montreal - Arab Today

Brazil superstar Marta scored a record 15th World Cup goal as veteran Formiga became the oldest scorer in the tournament in a 2-0 win over South Korea.

Formiga, 37, grabbed Brazil's first-half opener in Montreal to become the oldest ever Women's World Cup goalscorer, with Marta's second-half penalty seeing her overtake Germany's Birgit Prinz as the top goalscorer.

It was the 15th goal for Marta in four editions of the tournament.

The former five-time world player of the year coolly rolled the ball into the left of the Korean goalie after Formiga had been fouled inside the box by midfielder Cho Soh-yun.

For Marta it was a 92nd goal in 93 internationals spanning 13 years.

For Brazil it was a convincing win by the 2007 runners-up against a Korean side who had few real scoring opportunities.

Brazil's Fabiana hit the crossbar early, while Cristiane also missed by little after 29 and 41 minutes.

But it was an error from the Korean defence that allowed Formiga through.

A solo break by Cristiane through the Korean midfield saw her lose control of the ball and with Kim Doyeon too slow in clearing, the pacy Formiga raced forward to sent the ball into the net.

As well as becoming the oldest scorer Formiga is also making history as she competes in a record sixth World Cup, a mark she shares with Japan's Homare Sawa.

Her goal was her 20th in 137 international appearances.

But the Brazilian fans had to wait until the second half to witness the goal they had been waiting for.

Once again Formiga was the instigator, rushing into the Korean penalty area before being cut down by Cho Soh-yun.

Marta coolly slotted home almost 12 years after her first goal which was also from the penalty spot against South Korea in Washington DC.

Brazil's group rivals Spain and Costa Rica, both newcomers to the competition, played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day in Montreal.

Marta's reigning six-time Copa America champions next play Spain on Saturday with South Korea who are competing in their second World Cup and first since 2003, taking on Costa Rica.
