President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attended Monday the inauguration of a housing project in Gheit el Anab district of Alexandria.
Worth some 1.2 billion pounds, the "Bashayer el Khair 1" is part of a plan to upgrade shanty towns in the Mediterranean city.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Sherif Ismail and a number of ministers and senior state officials.
Commander of the Northern Military Zone Maj. Gen. Mohamed el Zamalout delivered a speech in which he stressed that the project, "Bashayer el Khair 1", is yet another national project that contributes to building Egypt's future.
This project reflects cooperation between the Armed Forces and people, Zamalout said. It sends a clear message that change is possible in Egypt, if cooperation is there, he noted.
According to him, "Bashayer el Khair" serves as an integrated system and is the outcome of thorough planning and honest cooperation with the civil society.
It sets a unique example of social integration that should prevail among the people without adding to the financial burdens of the state.
It was an assignment by President Sisi for the Armed Forces to work with governorates to alleviate the suffering of citizens, Zamalout noted.
"Bashayer el Khair 1" is now standing on a lot belonging to the Armed Forces in Gheit el Anab district of Alexandria, he made it clear.
The project was implemented in coordination with the National Bank of Egypt (NBE), which perfectly lived up to the responsibility, Zamalout said during the inauguration ceremony.
He also thanked construction companies in Alexandria for contributing to the project without making any profit.
It was there contribution to developing the Gheit el Anab district, the Commander of the Northern Military Zone said.
A vocational training center, a hospital and a mosque have been established, as well as a market and an NBE branch, as part of the project, Zamalout made it clear.
Roof tops of a number of buildings have been used to install solar batteries, he added.
The project secured between 600 and 800 direct jobs for residents of Alexandria and nearby governorates, Zamalout said.
He stressed that efforts exerted by the army to establish development and service projects do not negatively affect their combat readiness.
Zamalout then offered a copy of the Holy Quran as a souvenir to Sisi.
A documentary about Gheit el Anab and development projects in the area was then displayed.
