Saudi calls upon UNSC to assume its responsibilities in Syria

The UN Security Council is urged, now more than ever, to perform its legislative and ethical responsibilities and put an end to the on-going violence in Syria through taking all the necessary measures to stop the Syrian forces\' killing of civilians besieged in Homs, Hama and other cities and deliver humanitarian and medical aid to victims. The stance was voiced by the Saudi Arabia\'s Ambassador to the U.N. Abdullah Al-Muallemy during a UN General Assembly\'s session dedicated to the Syrian crisis. Al-Muallemy said that Saudi Arabia and other GCC \"welcome warmly\" the appointment of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as a joint Special Envoy of the UN and Arab League on Syria, expressing hope that the move will put an end to the Syrian people\'s sufferings and pave the way for the Syrian citizens to achieve their aspirations of a decent life, security, stability and national unity, in line with the Arab League initiative. He also regretted the Security Council\'s failure to take a decision regarding Syria because of the \"regretful\" practices of some countries which vetoed earlier resolutions, stressing that Damascus had taken the vetoes as a green light to continue its killing spree of unarmed civilians. He also said that with the Syrian Army\'s storming of Baba Amr, the world is witnessing a new Srebrenica, adding that GCC countries are ready to do anything that may help save the Syrian people.
