
Egypt's Foreign Ministry on Monday confirmed that the country submitted an official note to the Arab League (AL) nominating former foreign minister Ahmed Abul Gheit for the post of the General Secretariat of the 22-member body.
Spokesman for the ministry told reporters that Egypt's consultations with Arab countries revealed strong support for the Egyptian candidate.
Earlier, the AL said it has notified all members states about the Egyptian nominee.
The senior Egyptian diplomat's nomination will be discussed during Thursday's extraordinary AL council meeting at the level Arab foreign ministers.
In case he is elected, Abul Gheit will succeed the incumbent Secretary General Nabil el Araby.
In February, Araby announced that his term would end in July 2016, stressing that he would not seek a second term.
