Boxing brings Britain its final gold

Anthony Joshua gave Britain its final gold medal of the London Games Sunday by winning the super-heavyweight boxing title. Joshua won a narrow decision over Roberto Cammarelle of Italy and claimed the 29th victory for British athletes at these Olympics. At the 1908 Olympics held in London, where the competition was sparse for the home team, Britain won 56 gold medals. Since then the British had won no more than 19 golds in any one Olympics, that being the total they managed four years ago in Beijing. Joshua\'s victory also brought an end to the Olympic boxing program, which included five championship bouts Sunday. Joining Joshua with gold medals were flyweight Robeisy Ramirez Carranza of Cuba, lightweight Vasyl Lomanchenko of Ukraine, welterweight Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan and light-heavyweight Egor Mekhonteev of Rusia. Cuba, Ukraine and Britain all won two gold medals among the 10 handed out in men\'s boxing. No American male boxer won a medal at these Olympics after the U.S. group collected only a bronze in Beijing four years ago. Nevertheless, the United States wound up with one more boxing medal in London than it did in China because of the introduction of women into the Olympic tournament. American middleweight Claressa Shields won a gold medal and flyweight Marlene Esparza won a bronze.
