Erick Aybar gave the Los Angeles Angels a ninth-inning lead Wednesday and they escaped major problems in the ninth to edge the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1. The game had been deadlocked at 1-1 since the second inning, when Aybar hit a homer leading off the ninth against Kenley Jansen (4-2). Ernesto Frieri was called on to protect the one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, but he walked A.J. Ellis to open the inning and gave up a single to James Loney that moved Ellis to third. Juan Uribe next hit a grounder to short and Ellis tried to score on the play. The throw home was in time, however, leaving the Angels in front with Dodgers still on second and third. Frieri proceeded to strike out Tony Gwynn looking and got Bobby Abreu on a grounder back to the mound to preserve the victory and pick up his sixth save. The win went to veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins (1-1), who worked the eighth. Hawkins is in his first year with the Angels, his ninth team in an 18-year career.
