India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to field against England in the fourth one-day international at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Both sides made changes from the teams that played in India's six-wicket win at Trent Bridge on Saturday, a result that put the world champions 2-0 up with two to play in the series.
For England, Ian Bell missed out on his Warwickshire home ground with a left big toe injury suffered batting against throw-downs in the nets earlier on Tuesday and was replaced by Gary Ballance.
Meanwhile Moeen Ali came in for James Tredwell, despite his fellow off-spinner making a quickfire 30 and taking one for 46 at Trent Bridge.
Ali took 19 wickets in England's preceding 3-1 Test series victory.
The third change to their side saw left-arm paceman Harry Gurney selected in place of all-rounder Ben Stokes, who has been struggling with the bat and conceded 31 runs in six overs in Nottingham.
India made one change, giving a debut to medium-pacer Dhawal Kulkarni after Mohit Sharma suffered a leg injury at Trent Bridge.
Dhoni, explaining his decision to field first under blue skies, said: "The pitch looks a bit sticky and there might be some help for the quicks."
Cook added Tredwell had been "very unlucky, but we need to look at Moeen."
