The footballing world is waiting for the start of the 25th edition of the world's most famous football league - the English Premier League.

The 2017-2018 season of the league will get under way on Friday when Arsenal host 2016 champions Leicester City at Emirates Stadium in London.

It was in 1992 that the English league rebranded itself to make the league more attractive and lucrative. That turned out to be a masterstroke as the Premier League went onto become the biggest league in the world, thanks to Sir Alex Ferguson whose golden generation (David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville) at Manchester United started a new era of football in England.   

Manchester United's talisman was the maverick Frenchman Eric Cantona who also became the first superstar of the Premier League.

Since then some of the biggest names have illuminated the Premier League with their skills and goals.

Legendary names like Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Cristiano Ronaldo became global icons with their exploits at Arsenal and Manchester United.  

It's players like them and many others that have made the Premier League the most popular league in the world.
