5.7 earthquake hits Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 5.7-magnitude on the Richter Scale hit the city of Palu on Sulawesi Island in Indonesia Monday, officials said. The epicenter of the quake, which hit at 9:23 a.m. local time, was located 23 miles southwest of Palu, the Indonesian news agency Antara reported. There were no reports of casualties or damage, The Jakarta Post reported. The earthquake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami, but was felt by residents for 30 seconds, some of whom rushed out of buildings in a panic, Antara said. The national meteorological, climatology and geophysics agency, BMKG, records about 600 earthquakes every month in Palu.
