El Salvador volcano erupts for second day

A volcano in eastern El Salvador emitted more ash and gas Monday following a big eruption the day before that forced more than 1,600 people into emergency shelters. No injuries or major damages were reported. "The Chaparrastique volcano is still producing gases combined with small emission of ash, which is normal after an eruption," the Central American country's environment ministry said. The volcano, about 140 kilometers east of San Salvador, emitted ash over a wide area known for its coffee growing on Sunday. More than 36 international flights into and out of El Salvador were suspended because of the eruptions. The country has 23 active volcanoes, with Chaparrastique considered the most active, producing 26 eruptions in the last 500 years, the environment ministry said. Lava spewed from the volcano in a 1976 eruption, while the region shook violently in a 2010 event.
