'Isis' dropped from UN hurricane name list
UN weather agency dropping 'Isis' from its stocklist of Pacific hurricane names
Geneva - AFP
The UN weather agency announced Friday it was dropping "Isis" -- the name of an ancient Egyptian goddess that also happens to be the acronym for the Islamic State jihadist group -- from its stocklist of Pacific hurricane names.
"Isis" was replaced with "Ivette" on an alphabetical list of hurricane names for the eastern north Pacific region next year, World Meteorogical Organisation (WMO) spokeswoman Clare Nullis said.
The decision to scratch "Isis" from the list was taken by the WMO's Hurricane Committee at a meeting in Costa Rica.
The WMO has six rotating list of storm names that run from A to Z.
The list can also be changed to remove the name of a storm that was too deadly.
"Odile" was removed and replaced with "Odalys" in the 2020 name list, after Hurricane Odile killed 11 people and caused widespread devastation on Mexico's Baja Peninsula last year.

to 'eternal style' of late Alaia
Paris - Emiratesvoice
Two months after legendary designer Azzedine Alaia's sudden death plunged the fashion world into mourning, an exhibition in homage to the "King of Cling" opens Monday in his studios in Paris. The Tunisian-born designer, renowned for the way his clothes hugged the body, died suddenly in November aged 82, reportedly of heart failure after falling down the stairs at his home. The diminutive maverick, who ignored fashion week convention by showing when and where he wanted, in July produced his first couture collection in six years to rapturous reviews. Now some of his most iconic dresses are going on display in the glass-roofed gallery next to his studio and home in the Marais district where he used to show his creations. It includes the dress worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell, his longtime friend and muse, when she led
