The quake occurred at 8:21 a.m. (0021 GMT) in Hualien County at a depth of 18 kilometers, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The tremor was also felt in the capital Taipei, some 170 kilometers north of Hualien. The quake was Taiwan's 11th of magnitude 5 or above since January, according to the report.
