Tremor jolts southern Iran

An earthquake measuring 4.1 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale shook surrounding areas of Kang in southern province of HormuzganAccording to a report, released by the Seismography Center of Tehran University?s Geophysics Institute, and relayed by IRNA Tuesday, the tremor occurred at 14:38 hours local time (10:08 hours GMT) and its epicenter was at 26.93 degrees latitude and 54.89 degrees longitude.There are no immediate reports on possible damage and casualties.Iran sits on several major faultlines of the earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. The worst in recent years hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people – about a quarter of its population – and destroying the city’s ancient mud-brick citadel.
