Typhoon Man-Yi weakens after leaving 8 dead or missing in Japan

Powerful typhoon Man-yi was downgraded to an extratropical cyclone on Monday evening after lashing a wide area of Japans main island, leaving at least eight people dead or missing from floods it spawned in the country. The Meteorological Agency said the typhoon made landfall struck on Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, on Monday morning, and swept through eastern and northeastern regions into the Pacific Ocean. Three people were confirmed dead. The season\'s 18th typhoon also prompted local authorities to issue evacuation orders for around 500,000 residents on concerns over landslides and flooding, and caused power blackouts at more than 32,000 households. A total of 484 flights scheduled for Monday, a public holiday, were canceled as of 11 p.m., affecting more than 60,000 passengers, while train services were also halted or reduced. In Tokyo, the government set up an information liaison office at the crisis management center in the prime minister\'s office to deal with the disaster. The weather agency said torrential rain is expected to continue in the northern island of until late afternoon Tuesday.
