UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Program Achim Steiner hailed on Thursday the deeply-rooted ties with Egypt in the filed of environment protection.
In statements to MENA, Steiner thanked Egypt for its commitment to applying international environmental conventions, such as the Kyoto Protocol.
"In light of cooperation between Egypt and the UN Program, efforts are underway to support Cairo's turning into the green economy," Steiner said on the sidelines of the 15th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment, which was launched yesterday.
He underlined that application of the green economy will help Egypt save 2.4 billion dollars a year, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 13% and water consumption by 40%, and provide 8 million new job opportunities.
