Indonesia's newly-appointed Trade Minister Rahmat Gobel said on Tuesday that his ministry would build some 5,000 traditional markets with advanced logistic and management systems in 5 years.
The minister said that the traditional markets his ministry planned to build would be designed to meet the public expectations for comfortable, clean and hygienic markets.
"The plan to build 5,000 traditional markets was to heed up the president's promise during the campaign period. Now, efforts to find the proper locations are underway," he said.
Rahmat, a former chief executive officer of an electronics firm, said that regional administrations and the private sector would be involved in carrying out the project.
According to the minister, the funds to finance the projects can be retrieved from the state budget. He, however, did not disclose the estimated allocation needed to finance the project. " It is still being calculated," he said.
