At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 89.00 points, or 0.43 percent, from Thursday to 20,506.55.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 4.68 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1, 663.27.
