Abu Dhabi - WAM

The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has successfully completed the Energy Demand Management Project in Abu Dhabi downtown, aimed at assessing the current demand for energy consumption at the East 3 Sector, located between Hamdan bin Mohammed Street, Zayed the First Street, and the 6th \'&\' 4th Streets in downtown Abu Dhabi. The Project, initiated by the Municipality in 2010, is undertaken in the context of the civic body\'s vision in supporting Abu Dhabi 2030 vision for sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents of Abu Dhabi city. Engineer Salah Awad Al Sarraj, Acting Executive Director of Town Planning Sector, Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, said: \"The implementation of the Project stems from the Strategy and Vision of the Municipality aimed at providing a superior standard of living and sustainable environment for the residents of Abu Dhabi city. It is also aligned with the Municipality\'s strategy of utilizing the existing resources with the aim of making Abu Dhabi city a safe environment, given the fast pace of the current growth \'&\' development drive seen by the Emirate as well as the augmenting population numbers; which warrant an effective response in addressing all environmental issues.\" As far as managing energy demand in existing buildings, he said that municipality adopts a gradual approach comprising the implementation of other projects related to energy and water conservation measures, besides monitoring the overall energy performance during 2013, taking into consideration that domestic energy consumption accounts for the highest electricity consumption rates in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi amounting to 30.7%, i.e. one-third of the total electricity consumption, and 54.3% of desalinated water consumption. These measures will reduce the power consumption in the Sector\'s residential buildings by 22.6% and minimize the water consumption by 9.3% upon the completion of all program phases, according to the findings of the study.
