Cyprus president to address nation Monday

President Nicos Anastasiades will address Cypriots on live television at 1700 GMT on Monday after flying home from Brussels where he negotiated a bailout deal for the island. Anastasiades, who has been criticised for protesters over the agreement which involves painful reform of its banking sector, arrives with his delegation at Larnaca airport at 5:30 pm (1530 GMT), the presidency said. \"The President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades will make a televised statement at 7.00 pm today, with regard to the results of the Eurogroup meeting yesterday on Cyprus,\" it said in a statement. \"The statement will be televised live by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.\" Anastasiades earlier sent a tweet in which he expressed gratitude to Cypriots. \"Thank you for your messages of support. They gave me strength during last night’s struggle to secure the best possible outcome for #Cyprus,\" said the tweet. During 12 hours of overnight talks Anastasiades secured a 10-billion euro bailout in a last-minute deal with international creditors to save the island from bankruptcy and a possible exit from the eurozone. But the agreement deals a major blow to investors and depositors in the island\'s biggest bank, the Bank of Cyprus (BoC), many of whom are Russian, and will also effectively shut down its second-largest lender, Laiki.
