
Former Greek finance minister Yannis Stournaras was sworn in on Friday as the Bank of Greece's new governor.
He pledged to continue working for the country's economic recovery in his new post. Greece has experienced an acute four-year debt crisis.
"The foundations of a stronger, healthier national economy have been set after a course of successful fiscal consolidation," he said after the swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Mansion of Athens.
Serving as finance minister over the past two years until early June, Stournaras held a key role in the austerity and reform program implemented in return for vital bailout aid by international lenders.
With the new Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis by his side, Stournaras promised to do his best to improve the Greek economy.
Stournaras was unanimously selected by the Greek central bank's general council and his appointment was ratified by the government.
The main opposition radical left Syriza party objected to the appointment due to his economic policies and has said that Stournaras would be replaced if ever Syriza came to power.
