International environment NGO Greenpeace is a potential threat to India's economic security, the country's Intelligence Bureau has reportedly said in a secret report given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Office.
Quoting the report, 'The Indian Express' newspaper said that the country's internal intelligence agency has cited in its document various incidents, including protests against nuclear and coal power plants in the country, and has also accused the environment organization of receiving foreign funding in violation of various laws.
"It is assessed to be posing a potential threat to national economic security... growing exponentially in terms of reach, impact, volunteers and media influence. The efforts are focused on ways to create obstacles in India's energy plans and to pressure India to use only renewable energy," the intelligence report said.
However, Greenpeace Communications Director Bharati Sinha has defended the organization, saying that "Greenpeace is an independent campaigning organization that does not accept any donation from corporate or government entities".
