Abu Dhabi - Arabstoday

Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) has announced that Khalifa Port received the first shipment of polyethylene for export from Borouge, a leading provider of innovative plastics solutions. The Port received more than 700 containers of polyethylene from the vessel “Al Bazm II”, which had travelled from Borouge’s petrochemicals plant in Ruwais, 250 kilometres west of the capital. Previously, Borouge was using Abu Dhabi’s Mina Zayed to export its products to customers globally. Abu Dhabi Terminals announced last week that 30 per cent of Mina Zayed’s container traffic movements have already been moved to the new port -two months ahead of schedule. Upon the arrival at the Khalifa Port, containers from the vessel have been unloaded immediately and moved into storage at the Khalifa Port Container Terminal by the Middle East’s only semi-automated port cranes. The containers will be later exported to Borouge’s customers around the globe. “The new terminal at Khalifa Port provides Borouge with an efficient and cost-effective distribution point for its broad range of innovative plastics solutions manufactured at Ruwais,” said Wim Roels CEO of Borouge’s Marketing & Sales Company, who received Borouge’s first vessel from Ruwais at the Khalifa Port. “Routing our polyethylene and polypropylene products through the new Khalifa Port enables us to better serve our customers throughout Asia and beyond, and we look forward to Khalifa Port’s contribution to the successful growth of Borouge in the international plastics industry.” Borouge manufactures 2 million tonnes of Polyolefins at its plant in Ruwais and is currently expanding the plant’s capacity to 4.5 million tonnes by mid-2014. Khalifa Port is Abu Dhabi’s new logistics hub with the capacity to accommodate Mina Zayed’s traffic, as well as the cargo traffic that will be generated by Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad). With a capacity to handle 15 million TEUs (TEU is an industry norm for twenty foot equivalent units) and 35 million tonnes of general cargo annually, Khalifa Port aims to be one of the world’s largest ports by 2030. “ADT is very excited receiving the first Borouge cargo on the Khalifa Port Container Terminal only one month after starting operations,” said Martijn van de Linde, CEO of ADT. “This demonstrates our ability to offer world class container terminal services as well as integrated logistics solutions for our key accounts such as Borouge. It also shows that Khalifa Port already provides a network of Shipping Lines to the Abu Dhabi trade connecting directly to many destinations around the world. It is quite encouraging to see this evolving so rapidly shortly after our business migration from Mina Zayed has started. This means that Khalifa Port is already offering largely increased value to the Abu Dhabi economy.” Borouge was established in 1998 as a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Austria based Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions. Borouge is a groundbreaking international partnership at the forefront of the next generation of plastics innovation. The company has exported approximately 25,000 TEUs this year. Abu Dhabi Terminals manages and operates Abu Dhabi’s four main ports: Mina Zayed, the main gateway for cargo in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi” Free Port, that caters to smaller vessels, tugs and barges” Musaffah Port, located in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s industrial area” and, Khalifa Port Container Terminal, the region’s first semi-automated and most technologically advanced container terminal, which commenced commercial operations on 1st September 2012. ADT offers world-class port infrastructure services, operational excellence, customer-driven solutions and direct access to one of the fastest growing markets in the world through a diversified portfolio of services, which include: a dedicated container terminal, a container freight station, warehousing, cold store and a general cargo terminal that is widely regarded as the market leader in the region. By raising the profile of Abu Dhabi as the region’s hub for maritime trade and commercial business, ADT is supporting Abu Dhabi’s drive to achieve economic diversification as part of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. Borouge is a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions. A joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world’s major oil and gas companies, and Austria based Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions” Borouge is a groundbreaking international partnership at the forefront of the next generation of plastics innovation.
