North Korea gave 420 grams of food per person last month

North Korea doled out 420 grams of food for each person per day last month, a record high over the past year, a news report said Tuesday. The daily food ration per person stood at 400 grams between January and May last year before shrinking to 310 grams in September, the Voice of America (VOA) said, citing an official of the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) in Pyongyang. The daily ration per person later came to 400 grams between November and January, it said. In February, the daily food ration increased to 420 grams per person. However, this amount is still lower than the North Korean government's target amount of 573 grams. The WFP official in Pyongyang said 400 tons of powdered milk, 1,080 tons of corn, 200 tons of rice, as well as 833 tons of cooking oil donated by Switzerland, China and Saudi Arabia are set to arrive in North Korea later this month, according to the VOA. The North has relied on international handouts since the late 1990s when it suffered a widespread famine that was estimated to have killed 2 million people.
