Beijing police have detained a man who spread a rumor online about someone leaping to his death due to China's recent stock market slump, local authorities said on Sunday.
The 29-year-old man, a project manager with a Beijing-based technology company, posted the information along with video clips and screenshots Friday afternoon. The post went viral immediately and provoked emotional responses among stock investors who suffered losses over the past weeks.
Beijing police looked into the suicide and found the video was taken on Friday morning in eastern Jiangsu Province. A man jumped to death from a building in Haimen City. Local police are still investigating the case.
