The German Airline, Lufthansa, has voiced its willingness to overhaul Iranian passenger planes, Iranian Ambassador to Berlin Ali Majedi announced on Sunday.
"We have recently received a letter from Lufthansa voicing its willingness and readiness to overhaul the Iranian passenger planes," Majedi said, addressing a meeting between a German delegation visiting Iran and members of Iran Chamber of Commerce in Tehran today.
The Iranian ambassador, meantime, said that five direct flights between Iran and Germany will be launched by the end of January 2015, which include two direct flights between Tehran and Berlin, two direct flights between Tehran and Dusseldorf and, for the first time, a direct flight between Mashhad and Dusseldorf.
In February, a senior executive of Lufthansa announced that the German airline was closely following the political situation in Iran as the county weighed up the potential of a further easing of the sanctions
“Iran is going to be an interesting development for us,” Carsten Schaeffer, Lufthansa's Vice President for Sales and Services Southeast Europe, Africa, Middle East and Pakistan said at a media briefing in Dubai.
He said that Iran, with a population of 75 million, represents a significant opportunity for the airline.
"Obviously, airlines provide the interchange business and create new traffic streams and so we are looking forward to what is happening in Iran,” he said.
In recent months Iran has been involved in high-level discussions with representatives of several countries, including Russia, the United States and Germany.
The discussions have offered an easing of sanctions, which could open the country up to foreign businesses, in return for Iran curbing its nuclear program.
