U.S. energy company Noble Energy announced the discovery of a major natural gas prospect in the deep waters off the coast of Israel. Noble said a natural gas discovery was made in the Tanin prospect in 5,100 feet of water. The company said it estimated the gross natural resources at around 1.2 trillion cubic feet. The latest discovery for Noble is about 13 miles from the Tamar natural gas field. Major natural gas discoveries at the Tamar and Leviathan offshore fields have redefined the Israeli energy sector. Noble said the Tanin find marks its sixth consecutive discovery in the region, putting the total discovered gross mean in the region at roughly 35 trillion cubic feet. Israel gets some of its electricity from gas supplied through sabotage-vulnerable Egyptian pipelines, though officials have said the country must find ways to become self-sufficient in energy. A natural gas pipeline from Egypt was attacked in the Sinai Peninsula last weekend.
