Starbucks and Square Inc. have ended their mobile app payment partnership as Starbucks continues to focus on building their own mobile ordering.
The separation comes after Square Inc. made the move from their Wallet payment app to Square Order which will allow customers to preorder their food and drinks before arriving at the store. Starbucks, who has their own successful mobile app, has decided to move towards preordering for their stores using their own app.
Eventually Square Inc. will phase out Wallet entirely as it switches to Square Order. Square says it is still processing payments at 7,000 Starbucks stores.
"Starbucks remains a partner of Square's. We process payments at more than 7,000 Starbucks locations," a Square spokesman said Monday. "Starbucks has a valuable relationship with Square, and they're a critical partner of ours."
Square Inc. is headed by its founder Jack Dorsey who also founded social media giant Twitter.
