The Tasty Baking Co. of Philadelphia, known for its Tastykake brand, celebrated its 100th birthday Tuesday with a Birthday Kake Cupcake. The company also delivered baked goods to 100 non-profit groups and emergency response organizations around Philadelphia, WCAU-TV reported. The Birthday Kake Cupkake will be produced in a limited edition, the company said. Tastykake was founded by Philip J. Baur, a baker from Pittsburgh, and Herbert T. Morris, an egg salesman from Boston, who promised to "produce baked goods using only finest ingredients" and made 100 cakes on their first day. Together with Hostess Brands, makers of the famous Twinkies, which was founded five years later, Baur and Morris made Philadelphia the U.S. capital of packaged pastries. The best-known Tastykake products include Krimpets and Kandy Kakes. Tastykake was acquired by Flowers Foods of Georgia in 2011 but continues to operate out of premises in the former Philadelphia Navy Yard. It moved there in 2007.
