Premium electric automaker Tesla announced Thursday an end to "range anxiety" for plug-in cars, with an updated software system for its luxury S model sedan.
The so-called New Range Assurance and Trip Planner features work out routes to Tesla's network of superchargers, which can recharge the car's battery in minutes rather than hours.
"This makes it effectively impossible for a driver to run out of range unintentionally," Tesla boss Elon Musk told a press conference in Los Angeles, saying that long-distance travel "is now foolproof."
Currently 90 percent of the US population is within 175 miles (280 kilometers) of a Tesla Supercharger, which can recharge half a battery in 20 minutes.
Last month, Consumer Reports named the luxury electric Tesla S -- sold for upwards of $80,000 -- its top car for the second straight year, calling the market-shaking sedan a "technological tour de force."
